VietinBank - BTMU’s 7th Steering Committee

On 21st April 2016, the 7th Steering Committee Meeting between Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank) and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU) was held in VietinBank’s Training School under the joint chairmanship of VietinBank’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang and Mr. Go Watanabe, CEO of BTMU in Asian and Oceania.

Participants from VietinBank included Mr. Nguyen Van Thang – Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Le Duc Tho – CEO of VietinBank and other board members, senior managers of the Board of Management and executives from the bank’s divisions, departments and units; Delegates from BTMU side were Mr. Go Watanabe – the CEO of BTMU in Asian and Oceania; the management team of BTMU in Asia and Oceania, executives and senior officers from Corporate Banking Division and Risk Management Division of BTMU in Japan and BTMU Asian and Oceania.

At the beginning of the meeting, VietinBank’s Chairman of the BoD, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang had summarized the business activities of the Bank in the year of 2015 and in Q1/2015, the Bank has achieved encouraging success in reducing the NPL level and securing the leading position in terms of Corporate banking and achieved breakthroughs in Retail Banking. In this meeting session, both parties also had an occasion to share their opinions and forecasts about the next economic trends to take proper strategic steps.

BTMU’s representative also expressed their delight to see VietinBank’s achievements and appreciated VietinBank’s effort in the context of intense competition in the Banking industry ò Vietnam.

Another theme which is of paramount importance in this Steering Committee is the implementation and evaluation of the Medium-Term Business Plan (MTBP) for 2015-2017 after the first year of the plan. In the MTBP, VietinBank had set significant business targets and in order to achieve them, the Management Team of VietinBank had developed the targets for management, support and concurrently, communicated on a system-wide scale so that all employees thoroughly understood the general strategy of the Bank and allocated resources reasonably.

At the meeting, both parties have also discussed about the new partnership initiatives on cross-selling, Payment banking and developing services for SME customer segment. These are activities that VietinBank shall put high priorities in the coming time to reach the goals set out in the MTBP.

Right at the meeting, BTMU’s representatives had exchanged their experience in the mentioned business lines and committed to being the reliable companion to VietinBank during the process of transforming these initiatives into reality.

The 7th Steering Committee has marked a 3-year partnership turning 4 from the date that BTMU became the strategic partner of VietinBank. The meeting has also recorded the results VietinBank achieved in its business, partially thanks to the partnership among working groups and the professional, devoted supports from BTMU.

At the end of the meeting, Chairman Nguyen Van Thang expressed his delight at the result of the fruitful partnership of both parties in more than 3 years, especially the recent achievements. He also expected that working groups with VietinBank’s participation from relevant departments and divisions as well as BTMU’s secondees working at VietinBank would receive continual supports from BTMU’s leaders.

VietinBank’s senior managers also committed to creating every conditions to cultivate the wonderful strategic partnership between two banks.
